Burstow Launches New Building Confidence Scheme To Tackle Cowboy Builders

June 21, 2004 3:32 PM

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, launched a new Council initiative on Tuesday (15th June) to take on the cowboy builders and tackle the fear many older people have of being ripped off. The launch of the Building Confidence scheme, attended by local builders, saw the publication of the names and contact details of 80 local building firms who have met agreed standards.

The list has been put together by the Council's Trading Standards, Environmental Health and Sutton Staying Put Agency. The scheme has the backing of the Police, Age Concern and Sutton Seniors Forum.

Paul Burstow MP told the local traders people:

"Watching TV programmes like Rogue Traders where someone is being fleeced by cowboy builders: turning a home into a death trap, leaving the job half done, charging rip off rates for third rate workmanship is enough to put anyone off.

"For many older people the fear of being ripped off is enough to lead them to put off essential work on their homes.

"The message is simple, don't do business on the doorstep. Now there is an alternative use the Building Confidence list.

"All too often it is the cowboy builders who are in the spotlight, giving every builder a bad name. Building Confidence turns the spotlight on the high performing, customer focused businesses. I hope more businesses will join the list and that they all prosper from it."
