The Government must do more work to raise awareness of the symptoms of heart attacks, the Liberal Democrats said today.
New figures out today from the Royal College of Physicians show more people are receiving quick treatment for heart failure once they arrive in hospital, but delays usually occur in initially calling for professional help.
Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said:
"It is a tribute to the hard work of doctors and nurses that treatment for people with heart attacks is improving. The investment in the NHS that we called for is delivering results.
"This is judging performance simply on the targets that are measured. Ministers need to let frontline staff get on with the job of treating patients, not constantly worrying about ticking the boxes that the Government want ticked.
"The key message in this report is that the main delay in heart attack treatment is the delay in calling for help. People need to know the symptoms of a heart attack and when they need to ring 999. The Government should work with organisations like the British Heart Foundation to raise awareness and save lives."
