Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has raised the £600,000 bus shelter in Parliament. The MP highlighted the St Nicholas Way covered walkway and bus shelter scheme and criticised London Mayor Ken Livingstone for authorising the project.
Mr Burstow, who has been highly critical of the time it took to complete the shelter, told MPs that the scheme had been financed by Transport for London as part of phase one of the Mayor's London Bus Initiative. The balk of the funding, £530,000, came from Transport for London, with the balance coming from a private developers contribution. No Council Taxpayers money came from Sutton Council.
The MP has also criticised London Buses for failing to check the design properly before work started. Despite being consulted from the outset it was not until a site safety audit on completion of the works in December 2003 that safety concerns were raised.
London Buses then expressed concern that their buses could hit the shelter when pulling into the bus bay. Putting this right added almost £50,000 to the bill, at London Buses expense.
Commenting Paul Burstow MP said: "Ken Livingstone Chairs the Board of Transport for London who paid for the shelter. Bus shelters like the one in St Nicholas Way are part of Ken's London Transport Strategy.
"It is unbelievable that London Buses and Transport for London could not get their act together to check the plans for the shelter before it was built. That mistake alone cost £50,000. No wonder bus fares have rocketed and the Mayor's share of Council Tax has doubled in the last four years.
"The local Council has unfairly got a lot of stick for the St Nicholas way bus shelter. No Sutton Council Taxpayer money was used."
