Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has blasted Post Office bosses for refusing to talk to Sutton Council and local MPs about its plans to axe post offices across the Borough. The MP launched his attack on Post Office Management during a Parliamentary debate.
Mr Burstow and local Council Leaders met with London Post Watch chief Kay Dixon earlier this year to discuss the way the Post Office handle closures. Post Watch have urged the Post Office to meet with local elected representatives to discuss post office closures at an early stage in the process. Sutton Council with the support of Paul Burstow MP and Tom Brake MP wrote to the Post Office asking for a meeting, this was turned down.
During March/April the Post Office undertook fieldwork in the borough to draw up their closure plan, the details will be published in July. Mr Burstow also attacked Post Office plans to consult over closures during August.
Commenting Paul Burstow MP said: "Its time the Post Office started to listening to local people and talking to the Council and local MPs.
"It is simply not good enough for the Post Office to refuse to meet the Council. Such an approach simply fuels the belief that the Post Office have already made up their minds about which post offices will close.
"Post offices are often the linchpin of the economic viability of district shopping centres. If one pulls out that pin, many other businesses begin to tumble, and as a result district shopping centres lose their viability and vitality and close, to the detriment of the local community."
