Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, is at the forefront of a group of MPs introducing new legislation to improve the rights and support for Sutton's 16,000 carers.
The Bill, entitled the Carers (Equal Opportunities) Bill, will focus on health, employment and life-long learning issues for carers. It will be debated in the House of Commons on 6 February 2004.
It has been estimated that carers in Sutton save the taxpayer £143 million a year, with 1 in 5 providing 50 hours or more of care a week.
Commenting on the Bill, Mr Burstow said:
"Without carers the NHS and social services will collapse under the extra work. The Bill will help to insure that carers get the help they need when they need it. Too often carers are left to cope until they collapse or there is a crisis. Its time that carers were given the recognition and practical support they need to carry on caring."
