Citizens Advice Report: Need to wake up to mental health discrimination

April 28, 2004 12:00 AM

People with mental health problems are the forgotten victims in our society, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said today. Mr Burstow's comments are in response to a new report from Citizens Advice which says that people with mental health problems are getting a raw deal at work, from the benefits system and as consumers.

Paul Burstow MP said:

"People with mental health problems are the forgotten victims in our society. One in four of us will experience mental health problems in our lifetimes. It is essential that we wake up to the discrimination and neglect that these people face.

"Signs of improvement are being seen in the NHS as a whole, but mental health services are desperately in need of improvement. These seven million people should be treated with respect, so that no one in our society is left behind."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
