Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, responding to an announcement by the Government that it is to extend testing for Chlamydia, said:
"Sexually transmitted infections are rocketing, and it is high time that the Government woke up to this problem. Ministers will not be able to tackle this issue if the focus is always on treatment not prevention. Ministers should tackle the root causes of disease, not just treat the symptoms.
"Sexual health services are the Cinderella of the NHS - continually starved of funds to meet Government targets or to pay off trust debts. Waiting times in GUM clinics are far too long. This is crazy logic.
"Leaving these people untreated means that infections spread and the problem only gets worse. Preventing the rising tide of infections would save the NHS millions and more importantly, would save lives. The Government must stop dithering and work towards a healthier Britain."
