Sutton has been named as London's most efficient council tax collectors. Figures released to the Liberal Democrats by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister show that Sutton topped the list of all London Boroughs in terms of council tax collected in the 10 years since its implementation.
Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, commented:
"London's 31 other boroughs can learn a lesson from Sutton council in their efficient collection of council tax. The District Auditors are right to praise Sutton for its efficiency."
However, the statistics also reveal that London's economy has lost £1.3 billion in uncollected taxes since it was introduced, highlighting the tax's inefficiency and unpopularity.
Mr Burstow said:-
"Council Tax is as unfair as it is inefficient. We have seen that millions of pounds do not get collected, often leaving the poorest households and poorest boroughs to foot the bill. Those who pay, pay more, or have their services cut instead."
"Abolishing council tax would save hundreds of millions in bureaucracy, stop people cheating the system and allow money to be returned to hard-pressed taxpayers. Replacing it with a fair local tax that takes account of people's ability to pay would be a more beneficial system to all."
