The Government must urgently implement a strategy to deal with alcohol misuse, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said today.
His comments are in response to a report from the Alcohol Harm Reduction Group saying that overstretched emergency services are being put under intense pressure because of binge-drinking and alcohol misuse.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"The UK has the one of the worst binge drinking problems in Europe. Ministers should have woken up to this issue and taken action years ago.
"Alcohol is a drug enjoyed socially by many, but misuse of alcohol can have devastating health and social consequences which must not be underestimated.
"The Government has dithered and delayed on this issue for over six years, and has still not produced a comprehensive strategy to tackle it. Ministers must now urgently deliver and implement the strategy.
"The Government's obsession with hospital waiting times means it has ignored prevention. The root causes of ill-health must be understood and the balance shifted towards prevention rather than cure."
