Obesity: fast food companies cannot avoid responsibilities - Burstow

November 27, 2003 6:00 PM

Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, today highlighted the responsibility fast food companies have to their customers.

Speaking following today's Health Select Committee meeting looking at obesity, Paul Burstow MP, committee member, said:

"Food companies selling high fat and high sugar foods cannot escape their responsibilities for the consequences of the food they offer the public.

"Obesity is a complex problem. It's down to both what we eat and how much exercise we take. For food companies to duck the question of how much a burger and fries or can of coke fits into a balanced diet is letting their customers down."

Walkers Crisps campaign for free books for schools gave away 7 million books. To raise this number, the nation had to chomp through 1.2 billion packets of crisps. Commenting on this, Paul Burstow, MP said:

"For a company to claim to be socially responsible but then use a 'free books' campaign as a way of selling its products must call that claim into question. It is staggering that to provide 7 million books, 1.2 billion crisps had to be eaten."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
