Health professionals should not be allowed to work unchecked, Paul Burstow MP, said today in response to calls from the Alliance of UK Health Regulators on Europe (AURE) to MEPs to vote to protect patient safety.
Under the proposed draft Directive on the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (COM (2002) 119 final of 07.03.2002), healthcare professionals from any EU country would be allowed to work for up to four months per year, every year, in the UK, without being registered with a UK regulator.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"Patients trust their doctors, nurses and therapists and they believe they are registered to protect safety. This EU directive could put that trust in jeopardy.
"Patients should not be afraid that they are being treated by unqualified staff or doctors who have been struck off from other countries. Health professionals should not be allowed to work unchecked."
