The twin evils of malnutrition and obesity are in danger of becoming entrenched in modern society, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, said today.
Paul Burstow's comments are in response to a report out today saying that two million people in the UK, including 60% of hospital patients, are malnourished.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"The twin evils of malnutrition and obesity are in danger of becoming entrenched in modern society. The common thread of poor diet running through both must be tackled.
"If reports are true that the NHS is failing to spot malnutrition in hospital patients this means that patient care is being compromised and money is being wasted as patients that are affected need a longer stay in hospital.
"People should be targeted at a young age and encouraged and enabled to adopt healthy lifestyles. Breakfast clubs in schools are one way to ensure that children, particularly from lower income families, get a healthy start to the day."
