Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, today (30th October) launched a new initiative for carers in the borough of Sutton, the Carers Circle Club. The new club is being set up by the Sutton Carers Centre. The club is offers carers and their families' opportunities to have a continuous circle of breaks and make new circles of friends.
Mr Burstow launched the new Carers Circle Club as the Guest Speaker at the AGM and Annual Review meeting of the Sutton Carers Centre
There are 16,000 carers in the London Borough of Sutton, with 1 in 5 providing 50 hours or more of care a week. Currently only 3,000 carers are known to the Carers Centre, the rest remain hidden. It has been estimated that carers in Sutton save the taxpayer £143 million a year.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"Carers are the backbone of our care system. Millions of people in this country are carers it can be friends, relatives, husbands, wives, even children.
"Thanks to the Carers Centre I have had the opportunity to shadow a number of carers over the years. One thing those carers had in common was how isolated they felt, how desperate they were for friendship and support.
"The Carers Circle Club offers carers a practical way to have a break from their daily routine. Outings and activities, anything from retail therapy to a trip to the circus. Above all a chance to meet others and make new friends."
