Sutton and Cheam's MP, Paul Burstow, is leading a major campaign to persuade the Royal Mail to give Cheam back to its residents.
Postal officials have told the MP that Cheam's official address is Sutton, and that only small parts of the village, such as The Broadway and Park Road, are officially called Cheam to avoid confusion with similar names elsewhere.
Paul Burstow has told the Royal Mail that local residents are proud of the name of their village, which dates back to Domesday times.
But with little sense of history and tradition the Royal Mail claims that including Cheam as part of the address would "probably lead to problems" with mail sorting.
Paul Burstow has been told that a poll of residents was needed to persuade the Royal Mail to add Cheam to the official postal address, so he has begun a petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling on the issue.
