The Government must commission an independent inquiry into the funding of care for the elderly, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Older People Spokesman, said today.
Paul Burstow's comments come ahead of today's publication of a report into the treatment of a pensioner who died days after being forced to move from her care home.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"It is time the Government commissioned an independent inquiry into the funding of care for the elderly.
"There is no doubt that the country is still losing care home, places and care home residents are losing their lives. Ministers keep saying they have put the money it, so why won't they allow an independent audit to confirm it?"
"The eviction of someone from a care home can shorten or even cost an older person their life. It is vital that residents of care homes have the security of knowing that what they regard as their home cannot be so easily taken away from them."

Notes to editors
1. Liberal Democrat MP Paul Burstow presented a Bill in the House of Commons on 17th July 2003 to establish tenancy rights for care home residents to prevent the current system from throwing older people out on the street in less than a month of being notified.
Mr Burstow has introduced the Presentation Bill following the plight of many older people who have been thrown out of their care home with no-where to go following a decision of the care home-owner to close. Recent high-profile examples have included Winifred Humphrey and Cissy Townsend but have also included many others as 13,000 care home places were lost in the last year.
