Commenting on the Joint Committee on Human Rights Report that found that existing arrangements for the promotion and protection of children's rights are insufficiently independent from Government to ensure that the rights and interests of all children in England are fully protected and promoted at all times, Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Children Paul Burstow MP said:-
"The Government has ignored the message from the UN, the EU and now the Joint Committee on Human Rights about the need for a Commissioner for Children that protects their fundamental rights. Ministers' point blank refusal to appoint a Children's Commissioner is putting the lives of the most vulnerable children in society at risk.
"The Committee's report is a wake up call to Ministers to allow children to have an independent, impartial and unprejudiced voice about the way decisions are taken in their name."
