Local MP Paul Burstow is seeking a meeting with chemist Minister David Lammy to back local pharmacists in their campaign to protect high street chemists. The MP has already written to the Health Secretary, urging him to reject the Office of Fair Trading recommendations to deregulate high street pharmacy which give supermarkets greater freedom to expand their existing service which he believes would close local chemists.
The meeting is to be sought following discussions with local chemists about their fears for the future of the service which were voiced to the MP on Monday.
Paul Burstow MP said:
"Pharmacists are healthcare professionals. They are the front door to local care primary services. Four in five people in the UK have a chemist with in half a mile of their home and 75% of GP surgeries have a chemist within 30 metres. Six million people visit a chemist every day. "
"Chemists play an important part in the health of local people. By proposing to give more power to the supermarkets, the OFT will strip away another fundamental part of the local community.
"The eradication of local chemists will bring an end to free collection and delivery of prescriptions which is so vital to some of the frailest older people in Sutton."
" "
"The Government must end the uncertainty and reject the OFTs misguided plans."
