Local MP Paul Burstow, today welcomed the Prime Minister's announcement that Service personnel who served in the Suez Canal zone between 1951 and 1954 are to receive the General Service Medal.
Commenting on the partial victory for campaigners, Mr Burstow, who has held debates, asked questions and held meetings with Ministers and veterans in the campaign to ensure veterans got the recognition they deserve, said:
"I am delighted that at long last official recognition has been given to those who served in the region in the early 1950s."
"The General Service Medal is a worthy and deserved recognition of their service."
"But it is disappointing that a special medal has not been struck to commemorate the conflict in which many service personnel were killed or injured and that it has taken so long to give these brave servicemen the acknowledgement they have warranted for so long."
