Commenting on new figures by care analysts Laing and Buisson that show in the last year, 13,100 more care home beds have been lost, Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesman for Older People said.
Paul Burstow said:
"This loss of yet another 13,100 beds shows that the care home industry is in the midst of a meltdown while Minister complacently stand by. Too many closures, with too few registrations is forcing vulnerable older people to live in care homes miles away from their friends and family.
"Record numbers of care home closures have created a vicious circle in the health care sector. The shortage of good quality care homes has a knock-on effect on the NHS with increased delayed discharges, more emergency readmissions and longer trolley waits in A&E.
"Ministers must stop claiming that there is no meltdown in the care home market, and yet the figures speak for themselves. It is time that the Government gave a real cash boost to care of the elderly."
