Paul Burstow, Liberal Democrat MP for Sutton and Cheam, who has tabled parliamentary motions and held debates campaigning for Suez Emergency veterans to be decorated, said:
"I welcome the fact that the Government recognises the strong case for a medal for Suez veterans. After nearly 50 years, it has been realised how unfairly the veterans have been treated.
"I hope that the veterans will be able to march on Remembrance Day wearing their medal. In the Queen's Jubilee Year, it is only right that this long-standing injustice is corrected."
Annette Brooke, Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, who has also campaigned since being elected on behalf of the veterans for a medal in recognition of their military service during the Suez crisis 1951-1954, said:
"It is great news for the veterans and their families that Dr. Moonie has decided to set up a sub-committee to report on the case for an exceptional award of a General Service Medal for the Suez Canal Zone."
