Commenting on the proposals put forward by Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust regarding the possibility of a new hospital, local MP Paul Burstow said:-
"I have been calling for, and fully support the proposals for a new hospital in the borough. However, the decision as to where any new hospital should be built must not degenerate into a political bunfight. It must be decided on what is best for local residents to meet local need. "
"The Trust says there is a case for a new purpose built hospital and I agree. What is clear is that we are still 10 years off work starting on a new hospital. That gives the time for an independent assessment of all the possible locations. St Helier starts as a front-runner but all the options must be carefully and rationally considered.
"I welcome the idea of care centres. Bringing health care closer to the community can help to reduce admissions to hospital."
