Ombudsman to scrutinise Post Office closures

Local MP Paul Burstow has gained assurances from the Post Office Ombudsman Postwatch that they will look again at the proposed closures of the Oldfields Road and other local post offices.

The news comes in a letter sent to Mr Burstow following his letter of protest at the closure of the Collingwood Road site and the concerns of local residents that a further two closures were imminent. In the letter to the MP, Postwatch accepted that they had a duty to carefully monitor the situation and to make sure people collecting benefits did not have to queue for too long or travel too far.

Paul Burstow MP said:-

"It is clearly inappropriate to make the elderly and some of the most vulnerable in society, travel further and then wait for long periods to collect their pensions and benefits, which for many is their only source of income. "

"As an ombudsman, Postwatch has a duty to the residents of Sutton and Cheam to protect post offices that provide an invaluable service to many hundreds of local residents.

"I urge residents to sign both the petition in their local post offices and write to Postwatch to tell them just how they feel about these proposed closures and protect the heart of community life for many older people in Sutton and Cheam."

If you are a resident of the Sutton and Cheam constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
