Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Older People has called on the Home Office to take radical action over nuisance phone calls to older people. Responding NOP survey commissioned by Help the Aged published today, which showed that criminal bogus callers have targeted over 300,000 older people.
Mr Burstow said
"Targeted and criminal telephone harassment of older people is another insidious form of elder abuse and should not be tolerated; it is threatening the well-being of the most vulnerable members of our community."
"The problem needs to thoroughly investigated by the Home Office and gaps in the law that allow it to happen must be plugged."
"Better monitoring would be a starting point, accompanied by a Government campaign to encourage people to report bogus caller incidents to police. Our elders deserve to be free from harassment in their homes."
